I've always used Brothers' Keeper, ever since it's first DOS version. I must admit I haven't gotten into the latest versions because I find they are too much like FTM which seems to me to have a very "busy" screen. I've stuck with BK because it's very simple and after all this time I can add people blindfolded! Well just about!

I use FTM to open Gedcom files. Even thought I can do it on BK, I find it's much better to have a separate programme for the gedcom files which I get given me and FTM does it very well.

With BK I have several different families being researched. One file has nearly 20,000 connected names therein and the one I'm working on at the moment has over 15,000 connected names. The others all have several hundred in each of them, so as far as holding quantities of names, I've proven that BK does it.

I can also insert photos and add extra information where need be. So it suits me for what I want and I'm happy with it.

I've always used Family Tree Maker.....going way back to around 1996 or 1997, if I'm remembering correctly. It's the only family tree software I've ever used. I buy an updated version of it every now and then, and it's got over 18,500 names on it so far!

I use Roots Magic and I have been most disappointed with the customer service response. Also, it makes the fundamental mistake of assuming that all relationships are "married (male and female)" and ignores life-long partnerships (whatever genders) and, gay and lesbian marriages.

Personally I use Family Tree Maker but to be honest I keep it updated by downloading a gedcom from ancestry every now and then. its simple for me, the internet doesn't break and I can access it from anywhere in the world.
