Well the very simple answer to that is no!
I felt it might be worth covering this subject after reading a number of other people’s musings. The individuals in question were wondering why they see articles which appear to be very similar on different sites and which sometimes appear to be by different authors.
GenMates is an incredibly popular blog (indeed set of sites) which attract many thousands of visitors every week. My aim is to provide them with information which is helpful, makes them think and hopefully take action. Therefore there is a need for a constant flow of new information to the site. As I work full time and have a number of other interests it would not be practical to write the amount of content that is required.
Therefore there are three primary sources of articles/posts for this blog:
1. Articles by me – for instance this one you are reading right now!
2. Articles by Guest writers – I give the opportunity to other writers and site owners to share their work with our readers and to gain valuable links back to their own sites.
3. PLR or Private Label Articles – which I will explain in a little more detail below!
PLR stands for “private label rights”. A customer purchases a pack of articles on a particular subject. Those articles can be used as is and marketed as your own professional content. These articles can be helpful in providing much needed research for you on particular subjects. I sometimes rewrite them, amend them or publish them as is – depending on particular needs or indeed time available.
Sadly there are some individuals around who don’t actually understand some of the basics of online activity. They hide behind the anonymity of a Blogspot Blog where they don’t even use their own names. They then throw libelous comments and accusations around because they do not understand these things. I had an example of this today with one Blogspot Blogger who suggested that I had taken an article from eHow.
Unfortunately for him, because he failed to check his facts (bit of a poor Genealogist who doesn’t verify his facts!) what he didn’t realise was that the PLR article was in fact being used by the person who submitted it to eHow against their terms of use! eHow requires that all articles submitted are original works – sadly for the miscreant that this Blogspot Blogger was so happy to defend the article in question was not in accordance with eHow’s terms and conditions of use!
The important thing for me is that GenMates provides useful information that helps others. This blog is not about my own Genealogy Research, indeed I think I rarely mention my own research which has been going on for nigh on ten years now. This blog is about providing signposts to others that will help them with their own research. If the information comes in PLR form first (written by someone else for me), then if it proves helpful to others, as many readers tell me that the content here does then that is what is important.
