There are several factors that contribute to the difficulty of this approach: the female line is difficult to trace, and as you move into the next line of the family’s generation, the number of people to identity increases.
Tracing the descendants is another difficult approach to use. There are several variables to consider here: (a) finding parents of children is easier as compared to the other way around because you are not guaranteed that everyone in your line of ancestry had children, (b) for each descendant, there are two parents to consider, and (c) the number of children for each parents vary greatly.
Tracing using surname. You can begin by identifying all individuals who share the same surname as you do. From there, you must try to identify how you are possibly related to each other.
